Wasted Land

Wasted Land(2021) is a video work produced as a result of the projects Daebu-Construction (2019–20) and Wasted Land(2020–21). It observes and records the ‘land’ narratives in the current era, focusing on phenomena such as excavation for development or covering for landfill and reclamation. The work specifically documents and observes the ‘Sudokwon Landfill Site’ in the capital area, ‘Saenggok Landfill Site’ in Busan, abandoned reclaimed areas around ‘Sihwa Lake’ and ‘Daebu Island,’ as well as the abandoned ‘garbage mountain’ in Uiseong-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do. It is a record of the ‘land’ in this era, wasted, exploited, ultimately consumed, and forgotten.

Daebu-Construction(2019–20) is a public project conducted based on the observation and interpretation of the development sites surrounding ‘Daebu Island’ and ‘Sihwa Lake’ in the West Sea region. It seeks to interpret the structural contradictions and absurdities in Korean society that have been revealed since the era of developmentalism, using the characteristics of the object, namely, the ‘land.’ This project was presented through works titled From Sihwa Seawall(2020), Daebu-Construction, Archive(2019), and Untitled(2019).

Wasted Land(2020–21) is a public project conducted against the backdrop of sites related to waste. It originated from a visit to the space formerly used as the ‘Ansan-Sihwa Landfill Site,’ located upstream of Sihwa Lake. Subsequently, it observed and documented various waste spaces across the country, such as the ‘Sudokwon Landfill Site’ in the capital area, the ‘Saenggok Landfill Site’ in Busan, and the ‘garbage mountain’ in Uiseong-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do.
