Public Spaces in the Nordics

“Public Spaces in the Nordics” is a research project that analyzes and interprets the results of observation and documentation of public spaces and scenes of public art in the Nordic countries.

The main purposes of this research are: first, to understand on the ground the comprehensive relations between urban spaces and its residents in terms of the particularities of the Nordic countries; second, to analyze the influence of Nordic thought and ways of living on the methodologies for constructing public spaces and public art in such areas; and finally, to shed light on the relations and dynamics within which these elements operate.

The original plan had been to visit Oslo and the Norwegian “National Routes” in the surrounding natural landscape, but due to drawn-out travel and entry restrictions in Norway related to COVID-19, the scope of the project has been expanded to include Helsinki, Finland, and several other cities in Sweden and Denmark.

“Public Spaces in the Nordics” was planned and carried out as a collaborative project between architectural designer Sojae An and artist Sinyong Park.
